I thought my plaid phase might eventually phase out. But it hasn’t. It might be a plaid problem by now. Still loving it, and loving it even more on this color-blocked Ginger Dress with pockets.
About the Fabric
BODICE: Coastal Lagoon Poly Cotton Spandex Knit Fabric White Pucker
- Content: 76% Polyester 21% Cotton 3% Spandex
I broke out this leftover heavyweight rib knit I bought forever ago at JoAnn’s and used on a Dandelion Tee and a Skylar Hoodie. I had to get a little creative with cutting and seams in order to get all the pieces I wanted out of it, so the cowl has a seam on each side, the back bodice has a seam down the center, and the front bodice has one seam under each arm. I could’ve done a seam down the center of the front but really didn’t want that; hence the two less-convenient but far more aesthetically pleasing side seams.
SKIRT/CUFFS: Blush Diagonal Plaid Poly Rayon Ponte from Made of Love Fabrics
- Fiber Content: 55% Polyester, 40% Rayon, 5% Spandex
- Heavyweight
- Stretch: 100% horizontal, 10% vertical
I ordered 3 yards and have a lot left over; probably enough for the Elevated Blazer I’ve been considering. It’s a typical ponte fabric: good weight without being overly structured, and easy to sew. And, uh, it’s plaid. +10 points for plaid.
POCKETS/COWL LINING: Sweet Dreams Pink, Brushed Rib Knit from Boho Fabrics
- Weight: 15 oz
- Horizontal Stretch: 100%
- Vertical Stretch: 50%
- Contents: Poly, Rayon, Spandex Blend
This fabric ups the cozy factor. I used the brushed side for the inside of the pockets and it’s sooo niiiiice. Also used it to line the cowl, but I kept the face of the fabric exposed since I liked the heathering on it.

This one looks shorter that my others. I might have to look into lengthening the bodice/skirt if/when I make it again. It might be fun to do that and make a summer version using some sheer fabric for the skirt and layer it with shorts or something. And modify it to be sleeveless and revert the neckband. Possibly v-neck it. With some straps like this:

Notes for Next Time
- Pay attention to the pockets when attaching the trim. I accidentally sewed the first one to the back trim piece instead of the front. Not that big of a deal, but I prefer the pockets sewn into the front trim.
