The Reverse Engineered Mini Skirt

I’m feeling pretty proud of myself for this one. No pattern, no project. Just a skirt I bought eons ago that I’ve loved and recently realized didn’t look too complicated to construct. So  I reverse engineered it, bought some clearance fabric at Hobby Lobby (just over 2 yards for like $10) and ta-da. New skirt. In one night. (Seriously, I’m shocked how quickly it came together.) With fabric left over (I’m thinking scarf for the hubby. The print would totally work for a guy.)

I’m so tickled how the pattern lines up along the side seams, which is some kind of divine accident. I wasn’t even trying to do that.

In the future, I might make it a tad larger, but that depends on the fabric I use. I sized this the same as the skirt I have, but this fabric doesn’t have quite as much give as my store-bought skirt (which also has some years and washing on it so it’s worn in pretty well.)

I wanted to make leggings out of this fabric too, but I inadvertently cut twice the number of pieces I needed for the skirt so I don’t think I have enough left to do leggings. I’ll have to hunt down some other fabric for that I guess.

The lesson with this: it’s amazing what you can accidentally create when you just commit to experimenting. It can be intimidating to do something you’ve never done before, and I often hem and haw before starting a project because I’m nervous about failing. But failing is part of the process. It’s only a failure if you don’t learn anything from it.

Next thing: hubby scarf.
