The Power of Sewing: Think of Something, Then Make it

There I was at 9,600+ feet, doing entirely too much walking in the worst pair of shoes imaginable: ski boots. Hard plastic, made to keep your ankle stable and not flex. Not only was I walking uphill in snow, or up and down steps, I was also juggling two precarious skis in my arms and ski poles. And all I kept thinking about was this fleeting glance of some sort of strap I’d seen on someone else’s skis.

I can make that.

In fact, it would be incredibly easy to make such a thing. All I needed was some solid webbing (belting / strapping), and sew-on velcro which I already had.

So I picked up some webbing, did a bit of measuring, and in a matter of minutes, whipped up the simplest but most profound accessory for ski outings: one for me, and one for my husband, who remarked several times what a great idea they were on our last outing as we carried our skis around, happily slung over our shoulders.

And that is one of the things I love most about learning how to sew: wanting or needing something, knowing exactly what I want it to do, and then designing it to fit just right.
