Rock and Republic Sweater No. 3 in Open Weave Knit

How many of these Rock and Republic cardigan replicas do you need, anyway?

At least one more. This is fabric 3 out of 4 that I earmarked for these sweaters, and it might be my favorite fabric in terms of look and style. My gray one is still the most comfortable, but I love the color and weave and texture of this fabric.

About the Fabric

3 yards of “Dream Cloud” Stripes Open Weave Intricate Sweater Knit from Boho Fabrics

  • Weight: 8 oz.
  • Horizontal Stretch: 50%
  • Vertical Stretch: 10%
  • Cotton/Poly Blend

I snagged 12 yards of sweater knits from Boho during their Tag sale back in June, which means I got 12 yards of fabric for $3.89 a yard. Talk about scoring. And Boho’s sweater knits are so beautiful.

As you might suspect, an open weave fabric like this isn’t the most friendly fabric to work with. Cut edges shed and fray very easily, so a larger seam allowance will make everything less painful. Other than that, I treat it the same as sewing with any other knit fabric.

It does tend to stretch along seams, so a steamy iron will go a long way in reshaping it.

Humblebrag

May I direct your attention to that stripe matching? The back panel matching the front panels matching the sleeves. Thankyouverramuch. The sleeves were a happy accident, but I was intentional about the back and front panels.

About This Make

Kept everything the same as version 2.

The lower stretch percentage impacts the fit more than I anticipated, creating a very open neckline. That’s not necessarily a complaint on my part; I still love the thing.

Care instructions say to hand wash (or machine wash delicate) and lay flat to dry. But I pre-laundered how I usually run my laundry—wash tap cold, tumble dry low—and it looks fine to me. I am a very non-compliant launderer. I will wash all the things at the same setting and if something doesn’t survive, then oh well.
