Pencil Roll Cases Are Catching On

August 2020: the month of the pencil roll case. I completed two of them: one for a woman at work, and one for another of my nephews.

I figured out a few time-saving tips when it comes to sewing the elastic. (If I’m going to try selling these, I definitely need time-saving tips.) Using my new technique, I roughed out about 40 seconds per seam on the elastic. For a 100-slot case, that’s roughly an hour and 15 minutes, and that’s just sewing the elastic on. A lot more goes into these: the prep (measuring, cutting, fusing interfacing, marking) and the rest of the construction besides the elastic (closure tab, carry handle, hook and loop tape, more measuring for proper placement, the pocket.) So they’re quite time-intensive. This ain’t no $11 case from China.

I have yet to try a size smaller than ~72 pencils. I wonder how long it’d take me to do a 36-er or something. I think I’ll start there, math out the proper price point, list it, and then see what happens.
