A Twist It Up Top in Black and Silver Foil Houndstooth

I just learned that houndstooth is a type of plaid print, which explains why it appeals to me so much. I am still deep into my love of plaid right now. Not all plaid; I can skip some gingham prints, but everything else is fair game. Here’s an informative write-up on different types of plaid with photos.

Anyway, back to my houndstooth.

Step 15 of 16 on my aligners, by the way! Hello straight teeth! I’ve dreamt of ye for decades.

About the Fabric

Black and Silver Houndstooth Foil Sweater Knit from Surge Fabrics

  • Stretch: 25% horizontal
  • Fabric Content: 100% Poly
  • Weight: light/medium

Turns out this sweater knit feels a little rough. Could be the metallic look; metallic fabric tends to have this mildly scratchy kind of texture. However, it wasn’t uncomfortable as I thought it might be while wearing it all day.

The weave is pretty loose. Wind will cut right through it like it isn’t even there, but it manages to not be sheer at all. I didn’t have to layer anything underneath it.

The drape is interesting. It has a bouncy/fluffy/crunchy quality to it (don’t you just love my descriptors? This fabric is crunchy…). You can really see the effect it has in how the cowl neck lays—which I actually love. The light weight preserves a kind of fullness that my other Twist It Up Tops don’t have.

About the Pattern and What I Changed

  • Size: XS
  • Cowl neck
  • Sleeves: +3″
  • Length: original. (I lengthened previous versions by 1″, which turned out to be too long especially because of the loose recovery on the fabrics I used.)

I think I may have twisted my twist a different way because sometimes the fabric around my midsection lays funny. It could just be all that crunch in the fabric, though. I also need to rig some kind of fix to keep the sewn edges of the knot tucked under; they tend to roll outward and that is dumb.

It took me a while to figure out what this fabric wanted to be. I bought it in November 2020 and considered making a GGVNeck or self-drafting an interesting cape idea I have, but then I found the Twist It Up Top and it seemed like a good fit.
