Skorts Are Still Brilliant

Skorts. Welcome back to the 90’s. I’m totally okay with that, though. When you want the comfort and femininity and forgiving attributes of a skirt but still want to play in the dirt or put your feet up or sit indian-style, enter the skort.

The Shenanigans Skort

5 out of 4 Patterns has this cute skort pattern with a bunch of options: high rise, mid rise, low/maternity rise, 3 lengths (sporty, mini, above the knee), skirt flounce, 4 inseam lengths, and 2 types of pockets. I love me a bunch of options. With all that, I went on a skort sewing spree and made 3 versions.

Version 1 features the low rise band, sporty length, and the shortest inseam. The shorts are made of black poly rayon french terry, and the skirt is made of performance mesh, all from Made of Love.

Version 2 was low-rise, safe length, size XS, made of a 2-way stretch poly linen french terry and looks amazing but was unfortunately unwearable. Why? 2-way stretch is the WRONG kind of fabric to use for bottoms. The fabric needs to stretch horizontally and vertically.

Version 3 is made of a really drapey bamboo-esque fabric from Boho. I’m not sure exactly what kind of fabric it is–it was substituted in my order for something that was out of stock. I wanted this version to be mid-rise, but I forgot to redraw the shorts pieces at the mid-rise line, so I ended up doing low-rise on them. That probably works for the best because the band length in this fabric at mid-rise would have been too big. Even at low-rise it feels loose, but it’s not unwearable. They are incredibly comfortable and actually stay up well enough. I left the hem unfinished and it feels so good against the skin. Very lightweight. Being looser, it almost feels like I’m wearing nothing.

Notes for Next Time

  • 4-way stretch is vital.
  • I would like to size down to XXS and do a mid-rise version to see how they feel in the bamboo-esque fabric of version 3.
  • Light-handed fabrics (think bamboo) can stand to be sized down.
  • Version 1 is comfortable with the FT and performance mesh, but the FT rolls pretty fierce along the shorts hem. I’m not sure how to remedy that.
