Riot Skirt Sewn With Cotton Lycra

This is my second project sewn with cotton lycra: the Riot Skirt by George and Ginger. I really do not like cotton lycra, but I adored the wacky print on this particular fabric. As far as the Riot Skirt pattern goes, I’m in love.

Why I Hate Cotton Lycra

The edges roll pretty fierce, it clings to itself, and it feels cheap to me. It feels like it can’t decide whether it wants to be a structured knit or a fluid knit, so in this particular pattern, it’s not particularly comfortable to wear. While it has great recovery, it’s feels flimsy, and the cling added to the fitted silhouette of the skirt just makes it ride up while wearing. This pattern would be much better suited in a heavier, structured knit like ponte.

About the Riot Skirt

SO cute. The fitted, flounce, circle and pleated skirt options; basic, curved and striped waistband options; and the crossover suspenders, it’s just so FUN. I envision pairing it with the Teen Spirit Top for a really fun pop-over look.

Notes for Next Time

  • Use ponte. I really wanted this cotton lycra to work because that print is just so quirky. I did think the fabric was more gray when I bought it online, but it’s definitely a mint green. I would’ve loved it better in gray. But even with the fun fabric, I’m convinced ponte or some other double knit would work WAY better than cotton lycra.
  • Size down. I sewed a size 10 graded to 8 based on my measurements. Next time, I should do a 6 graded to 8 for a better fit around the waist.
  • Shorten the skirt by about 2″.
  • Shorten the suspender straps by about 1″. They’re a little on the gappy side on this version.
