Pencil Roll 3.0

Pencil Roll 3.0–a gift for my nephew who likes plain colors–features a slew of upgrades, both in features and construction.

Added Features

Most notable is the included carry handle. This particular roll also features slots for 99 pencils. I was going for 100, but math ate one slot.

Construction Changes

  • First, I just have to note that I used my Steampress for the first time to fuse sheerweight interfacing to all fabric involved. My life is forever altered. 8-9 seconds per section means a task that would’ve taken me at least a half hour (probably longer) with my iron only took mere minutes. And it fused perfectly. No bubbling, nothing came apart. Paradigm shifted.
  • All velcro is sewn on through one layer of fabric (as opposed to all layers of fabric in previous versions) so the stitching is hidden.
  • The tab closure is sandwiched between the outer and lining fabrics.

  • The final edge stitching was done in sections so I could change thread to match the lining and outer fabric as needed.
  • I folded the raw pocket edge a bit differently.

The raw pocket edge shown folded over 1/8-1/4″, pressed, the 1/2″ raw sides folded in, pressed, and the long edge folded over one more time and pressed before edge stitching.

Notes for Next Time

  • To fit at least 100 pencils, I need to add like 2 inches to the length. This will allow some breathing room on the ends.
  • The carry handle could stand to be a bit wider. I went with 0.5″. I think next time I’ll do 1″.
