Machine Deprivation

As it goes with most things mechanical, they tend to develop issues. I haven’t decided if I just have awful luck, if I’ve been sewing way more than a normal person would, or if I’m that brutal to my machine. Whatever it is, it is currently not happy. Which makes me not happy. Especially because I’m sitting on loads of inspiration from a new book I got.

The problem: the handwheel is really difficult to turn, and mashing on the pedal doesn’t help. It creeps along as if swimming through sludge, and then it’ll free up and move like mad for a panicked second before I can stop. And then I start again and the cycle repeats.

What I’ve tried: I cleaned the lint from my bobbin area, even under the throat plate. I saw no thread jamming it anywhere.

What I read about: adding oil. Although it’s annoyingly unclear if that’s a good idea since the Singer website says my model was lubricated at the factory and won’t need it. There’s also no instructions for oiling in the manual. However, I’ve read some people oil the bobbin area, needle bar, and handwheel anyway because it’s a machine with moving parts and all machines with moving parts need their lube.

So I’d hate to take it in for repair if all it needs is oil. Then again, I’d hate to keep using it if it’s in dire straits. I think I’ll just have to take it somewhere for fixins and see what’s what.

Le sigh.

Tilly and her buttons will just have to wait.
