Cocoon Cardigan in Stretch Corduroy

Winter sewing continues with a cardigan. While it’s not the most interesting silhouette, it’ll definitely be practical for layering and adding a bit of cover over more fitted garments.

About the Fabric

Leftover Shiny White, Stretch Corduroy Knit from Boho Fabrics

  • Weight: 14 oz.
  • Horizontal Stretch: 100%
  • Vertical Stretch: 75%
  • Width Of Fabric: 74″

Turns out, the ribbing runs perpendicular to the selvage on this fabric, which is weird. I cut everything as though the ribbing ran along the grainline. Thankfully, there’s ample stretch in both directions so I got away with it.

What I Did Differently

I was lacking just a little bit to cover all the pieces I needed for this make, so I had to:

  • cut one of the sleeves as 2 pieces.
  • Sew a seam along the other 1-piece sleeve so both sleeves have seams running from the shoulder down to the cuff.
  • Use a different fabric for the cuffs and pockets (leftover white rib knit from one of my Batty Tunics).
  • Shorten the long bands by 2″
  • As suggested, I sewed the pockets using my sewing machine, extending the seam out about an inch, and then when I serged the side seams, I just skimmed over the pocket angles and around the pocket curves. Works SO much better than trying to serge pockets.

Notes for Next Time

  • Oh, how to prevent that neckband seam from going all wavy? Either tweak my serger settings, or the more likely fool-proof way: stitch and finish with the sewing machine.
  • Shall I shorten it? Use the crop version with the long band? I feel like the longer the cardigan, the older it makes you look.
