A Collar-Free Candy Cape

My love of capes continues. Here we have a free pattern that’s a simple circle with a collar and I see much potential for fun things in various fabrics. But the first fun thing was a delicate white chiffon version for dessier situations.

About the Fabric

It’s chiffon and it has this unique raised chevron texture. And I don’t remember where I got it. Boho? Cali? Mystery box from somewhere? The e-mail does not provide me answers this time, but I had a lot of it. At least 3 yards. And I’ve only used it as an accent on a Be Dreamy Dress until now. So what kind of deets can I cook up about it?

About the Pattern

It’s free. What more do you need to know?

Okay, maybe a little more. It’s the Candy Cape from George and Ginger. So naturally we started off heading in a great direction. Her stuff always turns out so good.

About This Make

  • size: 14”

What I Did Differently

  • I finally played with the rolled hem on my serger but I wasn’t loving the results, so I stuck with my easy narrow hem technique—which is a little less easy on a curve at certain points (not sure if those were on the grain/cross-grain areas or bias areas, but there were about 4 points along the curve that were not playing nice with hemming.)
  • I made the collar and attached the collar…and hated the collar. So I hacked the collar off. That gave me a wider neck, but I didn’t care. I hemmed it and attached a 1” folded piece of white elastic and the button and I went from hating the thing to loving it. Because suddenly I could wear it with the slit at the back as designed…

…or the slit in the front…

…or the slit on the side for a chic one-shoulder look.

Notes for Next Time

  • I totally want some warm-weather versions of this.
  • And non-sheer versions.
  • And possibly a re-shaped oblong version so it’s around 5” or 6” longer over the arms.
  • And maybe I could stitch two seams under the arms to create some faux sleeves.
  • I also thought about cutting a second longer layer and binding them together at the neckline for a layered effect. Could also play with contrasting/coordinating colors/prints then.

Funny how such a simple thing spawns so many ideas.
